The Mountaineering Ireland Lynam Award is given annually and this year it went to Dermot Somers.

Mountaineering Ireland note that “Dermot Somers is a mountaineer, former broadcaster, and award-winning writer. An accomplished climber, Dermot was the first Irish person to climb the six classic Alpine north faces. He also participated in expeditions to the greater ranges and was a member of the successful 1993 Irish Everest expedition. He has written a number of books, in Irish and in English, inspired by mountains, travel, and Irish culture. Dermot has been awarded the Boardman Tasker Prize for Mountain Literature and the Culture and Environment Award at the Banff Mountain Book Festival. Dermot has also presented many television and radio programmes, in Irish and in English, on wild landscape, culture, travel and adventure.

Before receiving the Award, Dermot will present a lecture on his mountaineering and climbing experiences throughout the years. Since the inauguration of the Lynam Award in 2011 in memory of Joss Lynam, many leading national and international mountaineers have delivered enthralling lectures. This evening is set to be among the most memorable of these.

The event will take place in the Chartered Accountants Ireland Lecture Hall, 47-49 Pearse Street, Dublin 2, on Thursday 14th November. Doors open at 6.30pm with the lecture commencing at 7.30pm.”
